Life Changes + Loss

Change can be hard

Relationship changes, career shifts, graduations, divorce, health diagnoses, retirement, loss — these can disrupt your day-to-day life and challenge your sense of self. With any big change in life, you are likely to have a lot of emotions, and even if you think you’re prepared for and excited about a change, it can still really throw you.

Transitions are always easier when you have consistent support — one steady thing you can count on when everything else is changing.

At Green Fig, we can be an anchor for you when you’re feeling untethered.

The big life changes that can unsettle you

Everyone experiences changes in life, but that doesn’t make them less challenging. Life transitions fundamentally alter how you live and see yourself.

Some changes may be chosen while others are a complete shock, but all involve stress, loss of familiar routines, roles, and identity. These losses bring grief, uncertainty, and disorientation, even when the change is positive.

Common life transitions people experience are:

FAMILY CHANGES + RELATIONSHIP LOSS

  • losing friendships or community

  • getting married / engaged

  • becoming a parent

  • adjusting to life after a breakup or divorce

  • becoming an empty-nester

  • navigating adult child + parent relationships

  • death of a loved one

IDENTITY EXPLORATION + PERSONAL GROWTH

  • exploring gender or sexual orientation

  • midlife change

  • post-retirement identity + legacy

CAREER CHANGE + JOB DISSATISFACTION

  • starting, changing or losing a job

  • considering a leap to a different field or role

  • feeling burnt out, exhausted or unmotivated

  • experiencing imposter syndrome

NEW BEGINNINGS

  • relocating

  • retirement

  • changes in work or family roles

  • post-divorce recovery

You might think, “Everyone goes through change in life — I should just be able to adjust.” But without working through the big feelings and practical challenges of a life change, you may feel yourself struggling to find a true sense of stability.

You don’t have to go through change alone

Change is inevitable, and the disruption can feel seismic. Therapy can be a space to gain stability, develop insight, and navigate growth. Change often feels scary, chaotic and unfamiliar — but it’s unavoidable! And very often, it results in opportunities for growth, exposure to new experiences and people that stretch us, and increased confidence in our abilities.

Therapy can be a place to help you stabilize yourself, contain your worries, and develop strategies and insights to help you turn transition into transformation. Visiting us for therapy during a life change can help you:

  • develop coping skills to manage stress and uncertainty

  • clarify life goals + make meaning

  • explore your identity / new roles

  • set boundaries, where needed

  • discover strengths + build resilience

What therapy for life changes looks like

At Green Fig we like to say, “never worry alone.” When you visit us for therapy during a life change, we make space for you to grieve what you’re leaving behind, understand who you are as you step out of one role and into another, and explore your strengths and values.

We also offer practical tools and strategies to help you reestablish new routines, tolerate the distress that comes along with change, and gain comfort in new spaces.

The upside of life changes

Change isn’t all bad! Self-discovery and connecting deeply with authentic parts of yourself — while challenging — leads to growth. You are ripening into a fuller version of yourself, opening the way for:

  • deep and lasting transformation

  • a strengthened sense of identity

  • deeper connection to yourself and others

  • more confidence and self-trust

  • a life that is designed to suit you better

  • renewed purpose and energy

FAQs

  • As humans, we’re wired for the familiar — even if it’s not what’s right for us! Familiarity feels safe, the unknown feels dangerous. Stepping away from the familiar takes bravery. Moving from inertia to action is intimidating.

But. . .change is where the juice is! New experiences, relationships, jobs, environments challenge us to grow, emerging into newer, often richer versions of who we are.

  • Yes! It’s scary and uncomfortable to break out of old roles, patterns and spaces. Having someone walk beside you through it all helps. Culturally, many of us have internalized the message that we have to go it alone or shouldn’t depend on others.

But that’s not true — humans need each other — especially when things feel upended.

  • Everyone’s journey is unique.

For some folks, change wakes up old wounds that need careful tending to. That’s tender work that takes time.

For others, therapy through a transition only requires temporary scaffolding. Length of support is something we collaborate on with each of our clients.

  • Therapy is helpful if you’re feeling destabilized, uncertain, afraid or alone; or if change is causing stress, anxiety, and disruption in your life. It can also be useful when you just need a sounding board or objective other person to make room to help clarify things.

  • It’s always great to talk to a friend about how you’re feeling. Working with a therapist is different and has meaningful benefits.

We’re trained to notice patterns more quickly and to use interventions more precisely. Some issues are complex and require evidence-based approaches tailored to a client’s diagnosis or life situation.

This helps to move progress forward when things feel stuck.

In the middle of this road we call our life
I found myself in a dark wood
With no clear path through
