Feel calmer & more confident

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition, not a character flaw.  But it can feel like one when you’re forced to navigate a world designed for neurotypical brains.

ADHD therapy at Green Fig can address the inner critic and low self-esteem folks with ADHD often develop after years of being judged or misunderstood. It can help you reduce anxiety, heal from the fatigue of overcompensating, build more self-confidence, and learn to embrace who you are.

For help with tools, strategies, and accountability, we also offer ADHD coaching.  Some people do best with a combination of both.

The invisible daily struggles that bring you here

Sometimes folks come to Green Fig with an ADHD diagnosis, and other times, they’ve grown up hearing things like:

  • If you cared, you’d try harder.

  • Why is your room such a mess?!

  • “You’re so lazy.”

  • You’re overreacting / too sensitive/ too much.”

  • You’re always late—do you even respect other people’s time?

  • You just need more discipline.

  • You never follow through.

Over time, hearing these messages can turn into a harsh internal voice, shaping self-esteem and making it even harder to trust yourself or start tasks. You may feel like an imposter, have a difficult time relaxing or “just being,” or be caught in patterns of overfunction and burnout.

Our approach to ADHD therapy

At Green Fig, we understand how the invisible struggles that come with ADHD can shape both your view of yourself, and others’ view of you.

We provide ADHD-affirming therapy that recognizes your challenges and reflects your strengths. ADHD isn't just about focus and organization; it’s about rejection sensitivity, emotional overwhelm, time distortion and problems starting tasks or completing boring ones. ADHD burnout isn’t laziness; it’s due to years of overcompensating through people pleasing, perfectionism, masking, and attempting to control something you may not understand.

Benefits of ADHD therapy

ADHD-affirming therapy can help you manage the anxiety, depression, and sensory overwhelm that often accompany untreated ADHD. It can also help you learn about how your brain and body work and what they need to feel successful.

At Green Fig we provide strategies to increase self-compassion and decrease self-criticism.  You’ll experience individualized care that’s collaborative, respectful, and validating.

FAQs

  • Sure, lots of people struggle to filter out the distractions of today’s modern world or have a hard time sitting still for long periods of time.

But ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that makes certain kinds of tasks harder.  There are structural differences in the brains of folks who have ADHD.

Over time, we have gotten better at recognizing this both tangibly (through fMRI scans of brains), behaviorally (fidgeting, daydreaming, restlessness) and psychologically (fatigue, low self esteem, perfectionism, imposter syndrome).

So it may seem like ADHD is getting more attention these days (no pun intended), but that’s because it actually is!

  • ADHD is treatable but not curable.  It’s a chronic condition you can learn to manage with proper treatment.

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is actually a terrible name for ADHD.  Many people with ADHD have plenty of attention — for the things that interest them.

In adults, hyperactivity looks different than it does in kids and can show up as an inability to sit down and relax, internal churning, need for excessive exercise, toe tapping or leg shaking, a brain that won’t rest.

  • Inattentive ADHD is a type many people are unfamiliar with.  But it’s the most common type!

People with this type may have problems sustaining attention for long periods of time, listening to others without trailing off, remembering to complete routine tasks or forgetting why they walked into a room, and losing focus mid-task.

  • In addition to the structural differences in ADHD brains, there are neurotransmitter deficiencies in the ways dopamine and norepinephrine (our reward centers) work.

Without the right internal mechanisms for this, people often seek dopamine or ‘reward’ in maladaptive ways such as through shopping, porn use, drug or alcohol abuse, or relationship addiction.  Being more prone to distraction or having problems focusing places people with ADHD at a higher risk for accidents and injury.  And studies show that people with untreated ADHD often have problems at work (completing projects on time for example) or in relationships (having a hard time sustaining energy for dating or friendships).

  • When you have ADHD, you can often also have anxiety, overwhelm, depression, low self-esteem, and a harsh inner critic.  You may have developed ways to compensate — people-pleasing, perfectionism, masking — that are no longer serving you.

ADHD therapy can help you explore the emotional impacts of having ADHD (and other factors in your history), so you can be less self-critical, more self-compassionate, and more confidenct.
